The library offers consultation and loan services. Materials can be easily found through the online catalog and are available for reading in the library or at home.
Would you like to consult some books while you’re in the library?
- Check the shelfmark and availability of the items using the Catalog.
- You can retrieve the material directly from the shelves or ask the library staff for assistance.
- When finished, return the books to the staff or place them on the designated carts. The staff will take care of reshelving them.
All shelves at BEM are clearly labeled to help you find your way around.
Our staff is always available to help you locate bibliographic materials.

How it works
For University of Torino users
- Search for the book you need in the Catalog to check its availability at BEM.
- If the book is available, submit a loan request; if the item is already on loan, place a reservation.
- Wait for the confirmation email with instructions for collection.
- Remember to bring your Health Insurance Card (Tessera Sanitaria) when collecting your books.
For external and partner university users
- Make sure you are registered with the BEM. If not, follow the instructions for registration.
- Search for the item in the Catalog to check availability.
- Email prestito.bem@unito.it including your personal details and the book’s call number, and request for it to be set aside for you.
- Wait for the confirmation email with pickup details.
- Show a copy of the confirmation email (digital or printed) at the entrance and bring your Health Insurance Card.
Loan by proxy
Another person may collect your items if they present a written authorization and a copy of your ID.
Returns
You can return borrowed books by:
- Placing them on the automatic return cart at the BEM entrance, or
- Using the 24/7 return box located under the canopy of the new teaching complex (accessible from Via Filadelfia 73).
You will receive a confirmation email once the return has been processed by our staff.
Extended loan for graduating students
If you are working on your thesis, you are entitled to borrow more books for a longer period.
To apply for this extended loan, fill out the dedicated form (a copy will also be sent to your thesis supervisor).
Please note: all borrowed materials must be returned before submitting your graduation application.
Responsibilities and penalties
Loans are personal and non-transferable. You are responsible for the condition and timely return of the items borrowed.
Always check the condition of books at the time of loan and report any issues to the staff immediately.
If you damage or return a book late, you may be suspended from borrowing services for a period proportional to the delay. In serious cases, legal action may be taken.
If you lose a borrowed book, you must either replace it or, if it is out of print, purchase another item of equivalent value, as indicated by the library.
Your borrowing privileges will be suspended until the issue is resolved.
